A Letter To College Graduates: Laugh and Have Fun
May 21, 2024
Congratulations to the parents of recent college graduates! Having one myself, I'm proud, excited, and eager to see how she moves forward with her career. In times like these, I feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty happening all at once.
As my daughter focuses on launching her career, I'm focusing on not overstepping or imposing unsolicited advice, recommendations, or suggestions but always being her cheerleader, sounding board, and resource. It's an exciting time that she will hopefully welcome with a healthy mindset that includes the following:
Be realistic about your expectations and the level at which you'll enter your chosen field. Setting achievable goals will help you stay grounded and focused as you begin your career. Notwithstanding all your experiences coming out of college, you are still new to the workforce, so be kind to yourself and anticipate a job with responsibilities and a salary commensurate with that.
Stay present and engaged throughout your job search process. Whether you're networking, writing cover letters, or attending interviews, be fully immersed in this effort. Do the same once you land a job, too. Remember, pausing and taking a deep breath is a great way to help you focus on what you are doing right now.
Anticipate setbacks and view them as opportunities to develop resilience. Learn from challenges such as your resume going unacknowledged, not receiving the job offer you hoped for, or realizing that your dream job is anything but. It's normal to feel upset or disappointed but don't let these feelings last too long. Instead, channel them into motivation and keep moving forward.
Choose your mindset wisely. While external advice and guidance are valuable, it's ultimately up to you to cultivate a positive outlook and approach each opportunity with enthusiasm and determination. Remember that growth comes from your willingness to listen, learn, and lean in.
Be flexible and open-minded about the roles you pursue. Your first job may not be your dream role, but it can be a valuable stepping stone towards your long-term goals. Think of your career as a marathon, not a sprint. Enjoy the journey and be prepared to adapt and evolve as you navigate the twists and turns of your professional path.
Think outside the box and consider alternative routes to achieving your career goals. Embrace your individuality, even if it differs from what others think is the right path to finding a job and excelling in your career.
Get out of your comfort zone and welcome life’s new adventures. As you begin your career, reflect on what you've already accomplished and consider all the possibilities ahead. Accept challenges, celebrate achievements, and never stop learning and growing.
And one final thought. For now, at least.
Laugh and have fun. Don't take life too seriously – make sure you enjoy what you do, and do what you enjoy. Save your money but spend some of it, too. Travel and do cool things – alone or with your family or friends. Face the music when things get tough, and dance when it's your favorite song. If you take no other advice than this, know that no matter how challenging or busy your career may be, it will be much more enjoyable and rewarding if every day you remember to laugh and have fun!
