Words Matter

June 21, 2024

In the landscape of effective communication, many factors influence the path in which our conversations lead us. Recognizing the interconnectedness of various elements and their impact on how we communicate in our personal and professional lives is beneficial when traversing this terrain.

Clear, concise, direct, and honest communication is integral to forming authentic and trusting relationships. Though sometimes words can be challenging to say or hear, how we communicate influences how we connect with others. The more open and honest we are, the better others can understand who we are, how we think, what we value, and what we are trying to accomplish.

Words matter, so choose them wisely. Pay attention to your intonation and body language, as they are also forms of communication. When combined with confidence and emotional maturity, your ability to communicate effectively increases the opportunities for your listeners to hear you as intended.

For example, leaders with lower thresholds for managing challenges may feel overwhelmed and anxious when facing personal stressors, which may, in turn, lead to short-fused and dismissive communication at work. On the contrary, a more mature response could include regulating these feelings and responsibly communicating about work-related topics with colleagues. Personal challenges can understandably influence your mood at work, but it isn't a justification for mistreating others or an excuse for communicating in ways that are perceived as unkind, off-putting, and ineffective.

Another essential element of effective communication is the willingness to engage in uncomfortable conversations. They may be complex and challenging, but they are also important as they provide opportunities for personal growth. When you authentically communicate with others that which you would otherwise want to avoid, it is a vulnerable act that inevitably reduces discomfort and strengthens relationships.

For example, leaders with the confidence and emotional maturity to engage in uncomfortable conversations are more apt to hear feedback and recommendations from others. They also foster connections that contribute to colleagues feeling safe when sharing thoughts and opinions, contributing to organizational growth, change, and innovation.

Effective communication is not to be undervalued; it promotes honest relationships and personal growth. It may feel challenging to navigate this terrain, but you can do it! Remember that authentically and clearly conveying your thoughts is best achieved when being mindful that your words matter.
